Hard alloy is applied as overlays, inserts, or full sleeves on the outer diameter of MWD collars and near-bit stabilizers. This protects the underlying steel tool body from direct abrasion against the wellbore wall, especially in abrasive formations (e.g., sandstone) and during sliding operations in directional drilling.

  • Flow Trim and Orifice Protection: In mud-pulse telemetry systems, critical components like the mud pulser's orifice plate and rotor are often faced or manufactured from hardened materials.
